A renowned Labour Relations Consultant, Mr. Kwame Gyan Ofori has stated that conducive working environment is crucial in every well-organized institution.
The labour relations consultant sounded this word of advice during a seminar organized at Elmina Beach Resort, Cape Coast for union executives of Accra Polytechnic to educate them on their rights and responsibilities as employers, employees and unions.
He advised Management to keep open channels of communication with the workers and protect the interests of the workers. Mr. Gyan said, “As an employer, you are mandated to develop the human resources by way of training and retraining the workers”. “We thrive to improve productivity in our working environment but sometimes employers turn to neglect the basic necessities that facilitate high productivity”, he revealed.
According to the Labour Relations Consultant, it is the right of every employer to transfer or terminate the contract of his employee but he believes it should be done in accordance with the labour law.
Mr. Gyan said organized Labour serves as representation for employees on both institutional and national decision making platforms. “The union is the voice of the workers on issues relating to conditions of service, wages, and work hour which is done through collective bargaining” he said. He stated that organized labour in the workplace, negotiate wages and other working conditions on behalf of its members.
He cautioned that any worker who by any kind of threat seeks to intimidate the employer during negotiations of a collective agreement that group is guilty of “unfair labour practice”.
He added that the labour commissions act is to ensure that the rights of workers and employers are not infringed upon in any way. “They are there to take actions against any individual or a group who hinder an employer or employee’s work”, he said. He advised employees to take their work seriously adding that “work conscientiously, report for work regularly and punctually”.
