Students pursuing Higher National Diploma (HND) in Hotel Catering and Institutional Management (HCIM) at Accra Polytechnic have been advised to display the best of attitudes in order to succeed in their job search efforts.
The advice was given by Ms. Veronica Ame Seddoh, a hotel industry player with many years of experience, at a Mini-Function organized by the HCIM Department for students to showcase their practical knowledge and skills.
She pointed out the respect for time; decent and smart dressing; and good character as some of the essential attitudes that make a successful career in the hotel industry.
“In industry, everything is about the guest and not the employee or staff” she pointed out to the students.
She added that learning bothers on humility and the willingness to ask questions when one sees something new.
The Dean of the School of Applied Sciences and Arts, Mr. Martin Owusu Amoamah, who chaired the occasion, was very grateful to the staff of the HCIM Department for their incessant exploration of avenues through which their students can display their practical skills.
He called on other departments to emulate the HCIM Department in order to fulfill the mandate of Polytechnic education.
Mrs. Vida Doku, Head of Department of the HCIM explained the rationale for the occasion saying it is done for students to enable them exhibit their skills in diverse ways by way of the hands-on training which is the ultimate aim of our training.
The HCIM Department’s training cuts across Food Production, Beverage Service, Front Desk Office Management and Accommodation and the department ensures that students are proficient in these areas.
This year’s function was organized under the theme, “Job Prospects for the Hospitality Graduate in the 21st Century: The story of the Polytechnic Graduate” and is one of many to be held in the semester.
As part of the assessment process, visitors and invited guests to the programme were also presented with evaluation forms to make their impressions on the students’ performances known.
